Daily Blog – 3/25/2014: I went to the “House of Pain” today (The Dentist). To be fair, my dental experiences have become more pleasant as I’ve grown older. For starters, I’m having less cavity problems as I age, because I have less teeth that haven’t been filled with concrete. Nowadays, it’s not so much taking care of my teeth, but taking care of my fillings. Secondly, I have a wonderful dentist now, Jay Spencer. It was Jay who finally realized that I have “a unique nerve structure.” According to him, he’s only seen a small number of people in his career whose nerves don’t follow the standard textbook model. If you examine a human jawbone, there is actually a small hole at the back part of the bottom jaw. Roughly the size of a BB, your nerves in your jaw all converge together and travel through the hole, and then ultimately lead to the brain. It’s at this intersection on your jaw where the dentist shoots for when he’s trying to numb for your bottom teeth. On several occasions, Doc has shot me the maximum three times to no avail, so we had to punt. Apparently, my hole isn’t in the normal location. See I am an alien! Jesus is correct; I’m not of this world… Today though, he worked on some upper teeth, so I got comfortably numb quick! As I write this, I still can’t feel most of my face. It feels like a layer of mud caked on my face or something… Jay is really a pro. He’s gotten better at numbing me through the years, and has sort of cracked my code. It’s in hindsight now, that I conclude that when I was a boy, my first dentist (who I won’t name) WASN’T fully deadening me, thus enduring me to experiences that were like a scene out of the “Hellraiser” movies. Nowadays, the worse part of going to the dentist is having to sit in the chair. Whoever designed those chairs needs to be given a non-anesthesia root canal. There needs to be a lump or hump in the chair where your neck is. As is, all it has is this padded donut thingey for your skull to rest in. I like Jay because he’s a talker, and that helps to have a good talker while you are being drilled on because honestly, its not like you can talk back. So it breaks the monotony. Jay informed me that the “alloy” they used to fill my cavities today, cost $50,000 a gallon. He’ll talk about his church with me and his assistant, while I sit there and go, “uh huh…” I think it’s kinda cool that they got this big spit sucker-upper to vacuum up all your spit and teeth dust too. Although they didn’t do it today, sometimes they will use a rubber dam that is like a three inch square piece of rubber with a hole in it that they place around your tooth, when they are really doing “serious drilling”, or filling with crazy chemicals that they don’t want to spill in your mouth. The rubber dam makes it feel like you got a big piece of lunchmeat hanging out of your mouth. Then of course, they got the “matrix brace” which is like a mini-oil filter wrench that they screw onto your tooth to form a mold. My Doc doesn’t get into a hurry, and that suits me fine. He seems to be real attentive to detail. Jay Spencer. Great dentist and a great guy. If you’re young, he’ll give you a sticker or a witches finger or some fake vampire teeth—with a grille!!!! One of these days, Im gonna get a gold tooth too, just to have one... PEACE!!! L2theB lancebailey.org/blog.html
