Daily Bread NOV/1/14 Jude 1:20 - But you beloved build yourselves up on your most holy faith praying in the Holy Spirit. The many different dimensions of prayer are attested to by the dozen Hebrew words used for prayer, the most common Hebrew word for prayer being tepilla and the related verb palal. The primary Greek word used for prayer, proseochomai may simply be regarded as calling on God. Prayer is an act of dependence in which we look to God to help us. It is an act of worship wherein we fall down and adore Him and proclaim all of His goodness. It is an intercession wherein we take up a plea for the needs of others. Through the prayers of Job, those who had spoken all the defaming words against him were restored (Job 42:8, 10). When Israel lost their place of blessing and protection, they could be restored through prayer and supplication (1 Kings 8:33). Hezekiah prayed for deliverance from the Assyrian army and God intervened ( 2 Kings 19:15-19). Elijah prayed it would not rain; and it was so. Later, he prayed again for it to rain; God heard his prayer and it rained (James 5:17-18). Prayer is something that Daniel did three times a day (Daniel 6:10). When Ezra prayed, he was broken before God and confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God (Ezra 10:1). Many of the Psalms are prayers, like Psalms 142. The life and authority of Jesus was marked by His life of prayer (Luke 3:21, 9:18; Matthew 14:23, 26:36; Mark 6:46; John 17). Through prayer, the New Testament saints are equipped to move in authority to cast out devils (Matthew 17:21). God will so honor prayer that whatever we ask Him in faith when we pray, he will do it (Matthew 21:22). Gods house is a house of prayer; and when His saints pray it is like incense rising up into His presence (Matthew 21:13; Revelations 5:8, 8:3-4). Prayer is a petition to God; it is a cry and a plea. It is a conversation and a time of adoration. Prayer is an activity of the Holy Spirit making intercession for us and through us. It is a fire burning on the inside for the will of God to be done and the Kingdom of God to be revealed.
