Daily Chronological Bible Reading Pastor Anthony Hovey – Shoal Creek Baptist Church DAY 60: Genesis 19:1-38 1 That evening the two angels came to the city of Sodom. Now Lot was sitting near the city gates and when he saw them, he got up and went to them; and bowed himself with his face toward the ground; 2 and said, My lords, please come to my house, and be my guests for the night. There you can wash your feet and stay until morning. Then tomorrow you can continue your journey. The angels answered, No, we will spend the night out here the city square. 3 But Lot insisted, so they agreed and went home with him. There Lot prepared a feast for them, complete with fresh bread made without yeast, and they ate it. 4 Then that evening, just before bedtime, all the men of Sodom, young and old alike, from every part of city came to Lot’s house. They surrounded the house 5 and called out to Lot, and said, Where are the two men who came to spend the night with you? Bring them out to us we want to do perverted, unnatural things to them. 6 So Lot stepped outside and shut the door after him, 7 He said to the men, Please, my friends, I beg you, please don’t do this wicked thing! 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man before. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do whatever you want with them. But please don’t do anything to these men. They have come to my house, and are under my protection. 9 Stand back! they shouted. This fellow came to town as an outsider, and now he’s acting like our judge! We’ll treat you far worse than those other men! And they lunged toward Lot to break down the door. 10 But the men opened the door, and pulled Lot back inside the house, and closed it. 11 Then they blinded all the men, young and old, who were at the door of the house, so they gave up trying to get inside. 12 The two men said unto Lot, Do you have any other relatives here in the city? Do you have any sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or any other people from your family here? If so, you should tell them to leave now. 13 For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against it is so great that it has reached the Lord, and he has sent us to destroy it. 14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, the men who had married his other daughters. He said, Hurry and get out of this city! For the Lord will soon destroy it! But they thought he was joking. 15 The next morning at dawn, the angels became insistent. Hurry, they said to Lot. Take your wife and your two daughters who and get out right now, or else you will be destroyed with the city! 16 And when he was still hesitant, the angels seized his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters and led Lot and his family safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful unto Lot. 17 And when they were safely out of the city, one of them said, Run for your lives! Don’t look back at the city, and don’t stop anywhere in the valley. Run until you are in the mountains. For if you stop, you will be destroyed with the city! 18 But Lot said unto them, Please my Lord: 19 You have been exceedingly gracious to me, your servant, you have saved my life, and have shown me great kindness. But I cannot make it to the mountains. What if I am too slow and something happens? I will be killed! 20 Look, there is a small village nearby. Please let me go there instead; don’t you see how small it is? Then my life will be saved. 21 And the angel said to Lot, I will grant your request. I will not destroy the little village of which you speak. 22 But hurry! Escape to it, for I can do nothing until you arrive there. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar, which means little place. 23 And Lot reached the village just as the sun was rising over the horizon. 24 Then the Lord rained down fire and burning sulfur from out of heaven upon Sodom and Gomorrah. 25 And he utterly destroyed them, along with the other cities and villages of the plain, wiping out all the people and every bit of vegetation. 26 But Lot’s wife looked back as she was following him, and she was turned into a pillar of salt. 27 The early the next morning, Abraham got up and hurried out to the place where he stood before the Lord. 28 And he looked out across the plain toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and watched as columns of smoke rose from the cities like smoke from a furnace. 29 But God had remembered Abraham’s request and kept Lot safe, removing him from the disaster that engulfed the cities on the plain. 30 Afterward Lot left because he was afraid to stay in Zoar, so he and his two daughters went to live in the mountains in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, Everywhere on the earth, men and women marry and have a family. But our father is old, and there are no men around here to give us children. 32 So let’s get our father drunk with wine, and we will lie with him, that way we will preserve the lineage of our family through our father. 33 So that night they got him drunk with wine and the older daughter went in and lay with her father; he was unaware of her lying down or getting up again. 34 The next morning the older daughter said to her younger sister, I lay with our father last night. Let’s get him drunk with wine again tonight, and you go in and lie with him as well. That way we will preserve the lineage of our family through our father. 35 So that night they got him drunk with wine again, and the younger daughter went in lay with him; again, he was unaware of her lying down or getting up again. 36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot where with child by their father. 37 The older daughter gave birth to a son. She named him Moab (which means from father); he is the father of all the Moabites to this day. 38 The younger daughter also gave birth to a son. She named him Ben-Ammi (which means son of my kinsman); he is the father of all the Ammonites to this day. Share this with your friends. Give them the gift of Gods Word.
