Daily Devotion Sunday Nov. 30, 2014 Psalm 130.5-6 ‘I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the LORD more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.’ There’s a longing coupled with an expectation of hope based on past experience with a merciful God that is given voice in these verses from the Psalm 130. I never understood the poignancy of these words about waiting until I became a mother with a sick child. For it’s always at night that the fever spikes; it’s at night that the cough settles deeper; and it’s at night, in those efforts to soothe, comfort and cradle, that the imagination runs wild, allowing the weariness and worry to settle in as deep and thick as the darkness outside. But FINALLY, morning comes. And in that first glimmer of dawn everything takes on a new light. Certainly the child is still sick, but now there’s hope. A hope which not only revives the mother or father’s energy, but a hope based on previous experience, that, soon, with the doctor appointment, with the miracle of modern medicine, all will be well. As we begin the Advent season these words speak to us as people who are called to wait. We wait for the Lord once again. We wait and we watch for the miracle that destroys the power of sin and death. We wait and tell the story, inviting others to come and hear and see for themselves. We wait with anticipation, for we know that the dawn will soon come again and with it this Word that gives life. In the meantime we ask that God would give us the patience to watch for the light – to watch with wonder and energy for this soon-to-be-realized expectation given by a merciful God who not only loves us, but who assures us in the gift of his Son, that all will be well. Patient God, in this advent season help us to wait with hope and expectation as you also help us to soothe, comfort, and care for all who are hurting in the dark nights of their loneliness, poverty, and despair. AMEN
