Daily Devotional for Tuesday, January 28, 2014 Scripture: Psalm 27:1, 4-9 (CEB) The LORD is my light and my salvation. Should I fear anyone? The LORD is a fortress protecting my life. Should I be frightened of anything? I have asked one thing from the LORD — it’s all I seek — to live in the LORD ’s house all the days of my life, seeing the LORD ’s beauty and constantly adoring his temple. Because he will shelter me in his own dwelling during troubling times; he will hide me in a secret place in his own tent; he will set me up high, safe on a rock. Now my head is higher than the enemies surrounding me, and I will offer sacrifices in God’s tent— sacrifices with shouts of joy! I will sing and praise the LORD. LORD, listen to my voice when I cry out— have mercy on me and answer me! Come, my heart says, seek God’s face. LORD, I do seek your face! Please don’t hide it from me! Don’t push your servant aside angrily— you have been my help! God who saves me, don’t neglect me! Don’t leave me all alone! Reflection: Think back (or refer back) to the Daily Devotional for January 20th. The central theme of that day’s devotional was to seek out where Jesus abides and there abide with him by following him through holiness of heart and life. This selection from Psalm 27 carries the same kind of message, with a slight twist. We often fear what God is calling us to do. We fear going into places and situations that make us uncomfortable. Notice, however, what happens when we ask God, “Where are you abiding?” Notice what happens when God answers, as Jesus did the disciples of John, “Come and see.” Notice what happens when we, in faith, leave behind all of the things that tie us down and hold us back and go to see where God lives. We get there and we find out that it is not where we expected God to live. We see all of the problems, the people in need, the suffering…and we remain. As the psalmist proclaims through rhetorical questions, we need not fear anyone or anything we find in those places because the Lord is our light and our salvation, a fortress for us. We have answered the call of Jesus, gone into the places that seem dangerous and forbidden, simply because the Lord we trust to be faithful and protective has lead us into these places where God truly abides, knowing that it’s the safest place for us to be. There goes God, doing things backward again. Prayer: Let your prayer today be one seeking where the Lord is leading you to serve outside of your comfort zone. Listen for God’s guidance and look for opportunities today to answer that call.
