Daily Lectionary Devotion Mark 14:53-72 April 8, 2014 I AM / Recognize Your Sin and Confess Jesus stands before the church council. Ouch, no one likes to stand before the church council! They can be ruthless! Many people bring false testimony against Jesus but their testimony doesn’t agree so the High Priest asked Jesus directly, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” I overheard a conversation between two people at a metro station in St. Louis; yes I was dropping eves. The man said, “Nowhere in the Bible does Jesus say he is God.” I should have spoken up but I was about to ask him for directions and wanted to get to my destination. I was like Peter. I had the chance to confess Jesus but I was afraid. I should have shouted, “That’s not true!” But I didn’t. Sorry Jesus! I pray I don’t make that mistake again. On to the text, Jesus answers the High Priest, “I am….” Got it Jesus! Loud and clear, you are the great “I AM”; the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jesus you are the Christ, the Savior of the world. No question Jesus is clear; He is God the Son, in the flesh. After all, what does the High Priest do when he hears Jesus response? He tears his garments and accuses Jesus of blasphemy. Peter is questioned. “Hey, you are one of this, Jesus guys disciples right?!” “Nope, not me, you have me confused with someone else. I don’t know any Jesus! I swear!” Oh poor peter! The blessing of being Peter is that he recognized his sin. He knew he should have boldly confessed Jesus as his teacher and master, his Lord and Savior, but he didn’t. Peter had a chance to confess and it slipped through his fingers. Peter didn’t make that mistake again!
