Daily Manna Update, Thursday 12, September 2013 Topic: Single-Minded Devotion TEXT: PSALM 86:11-17 KEY VERSE: “Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name” (Psalm 86:11). The heart is the most vital organ of the human body, as several commentators have noted: “When we go to heaven, we will go heart-first not head-first”. This saying underscores the importance of the heart in our relationship with God. The word “heart” is used in the Bible several times to represent a person’s entire inner self including the will and the mind. It includes the whole of our thinking process and memory. The heart is the place where our feelings are created. The lead verse in our text is a prayer by the Psalmist for a heart undistracted and undivided in service to God. A heart set on a multiplicity of pursuits and goals, and drawn apart by diverse issues of earthly cares cannot find the peace to offer a consecrated and concentrated service to God. Neither will that heart be able to find the needed time for the old time religion that leads to real salvation. God desires that our hearts be filled with sacred affection and love. All our emotions, purposes, thoughts and entire power of the mind should unite together in surrendered devotion to God. And surely, He rewards those who sincerely seek Him. He is far, however, from mere professors of religion who keep their hearts away from Him. Satan recognizes the central place of the human heart and frequently “carries” out aggressive assaults against it to weaken or discourage it from seeking the Lord. Therefore, if you are tempted to doubt God’s promises, or are troubled with wandering thoughts in times of prayer or while sitting under a ministration, or if mistrust and unfounded suspicions against God’s people flood your heart suddenly, this is what to do: “Gird up the loins of your mind”, and put the devil to shame by consecrating your heart, thoughts and life afresh unto God (1 Peter 1:13). THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: One mind, one Lord, one purpose is the credo of life.
