Daily News finally prints (and edits) our letters: Stable existence Manhattan: Voicer Alison Clarke bizarrely denies that Intro 573 would prevent horses from being sold to slaughterhouses once the carriage horse industry is banned. I can only assume she hasn’t read the bill. There are wonderful sanctuary homes waiting for each carriage horse that needs placement. Edita Birnkrant Broken union Manhattan: Regarding Jonathan Tasini’s “Labor must reject Pat Lynch’s bitter bile” (Op-Ed, Dec. 29): union members would also do well to reject the lies of the Teamsters regarding the horse carriage industry’s “good union jobs.” Members of the carriage trade do not get medical, vacation or sick- pay benefits. Their union dues are lobbying fees. The workers are independent contractors and get nothing, not even deductions for Social Security. Elizabeth Forel Driven to distraction Woodside: The Daily News needs to stop exploiting the tragic death of Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos just to keep the carriage horses. Highlighting the donation of the “hard-pressed” carriage drivers to the families’ fund suggests they or you are trying to curry favor with the NYPD. When the ASPCA gave up humane law enforcement in January 2014, the NYPD was supposed to take over. But the drivers continue to violate laws at the hack line and the NYPD is nowhere to be found.
