Daily devotion, 11/9/13 Sorry I missed yesterday, everyone! Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, “Blessed are you of the LORD! I have carried out the command of the LORD.” But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?” 1 Samuel 15:13-14 These three chapters have several stories that inspire me, like the anointing of the shepherd boy, David, as king over Israel and the story of David and Goliath. But chapter 15 challenges me toward holy living and, with the events unfolding in Fayetteville, Arkansas, last night, it is appropriate for me to consider it more closely. Saul had been given clear instructions on how to deal with the spoils of the battles against the Amalekites but chose to act otherwise. Yet, when he saw the prophet from God, Saul acted like he had done exactly what was expected. Samuel, having heard the reports of what Saul had done, went to see him. Saul was chastised for rebellion and insubordination, for rejecting the word of the Lord. As a result, the kingship was taken away from Saul to be given to another. When we are entrusted with authority and leadership, we can begin to act as if we answer to no one but ourselves. We justify our actions of disobedience. We profess loyalty while acting with rebellion and insubordination. But the day of reckoning will come. It may come today, maybe tomorrow, perhaps some day in the distant future, but it will certainly come. God will not be mocked. Father, lead me to obedience and trust, surrender and holiness. Help me keep my eyes on Jesus and Him exalted as Lord of all.
