In what look like commandments was in a book. The book, Planning: Key to Retirement without Tears has 14 chapters and written in simple concise form for easy reading. It is well structured taking into consideration basic issues in retirement planning. In his review, Professor M. A. Mainoma noted that the book discusses Types and methods of retirement, Agony of retirees, need to plan ahead and as well as how to plan. Techniques in retirement plan, role of cooperative societies in retirement planning and factors hindering effective planning were also discussed. The author, Aliyu Yahaya also highlighted the significance of savings, transition business opportunities and proper documentation (record keeping). The book also provided information on the environment of pension administration in Nigeria. The book also provided practical guide to the essentials of effective post retirement management. No doubt, the book is a timely warning to workers both at the public and private sector not to ignore retirement planning. Chairman/Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Ahmadu Giade and His Royal Highness, Emir of Bauchi Alhaji Dr Rilwanu Sulaimanu Adamu were among notable guests that witnessed the public presentation of the book at the Women Development Center Abuja. They urged workers to convert retirement phobia into a delight through effective planning. Some Guests who commented on the book written by An Assistant Director of Finance of the NDLEA, Aliyu Yahaya said that it was an eye opener on the subject of retirement considered a nightmare to most workers. Ahmadu Giade who was the Chief Host at the event called on workers not only to buy the book but to read and take practical steps in the implementation of the suggestions offered on how to enjoy retirement. “This is a very crucial subject that has to do with the welfare of the worker and his or her family members. It is therefore not enough to buy the book but most essentially reading it and taking practical steps to implement the recommendations. This will assist workers in sustaining their standard of living many years after retirement” Giade stated. Emir of Bauchi also urged workers to make the book their companion to avoid the agonies of miserable and frustrated lifestyles of retirees. “If only people will imbibe the culture of prudence and effective planning for retirement, the pains and dread of retirement will be a thing of the past” the royal father noted. The Emir was represented by the Fagachi of Bauchi, Mallam Ali Wakili. Chief launcher at the event, Alhaji Dahiru Manga urged government to make retirement planning compulsory to workers. He was represented by Alhaji Aliyu Masanawa. A retired Justice and President, Wamba Traditional Council, Alhaji Lawal Musa Nagogo commended the author for writing the book. “I wish to commend the author for this bold initiative of writing on a subject that many writers have neglected” Lawal stated. Senator Dr Yusufu Musa Nagogo, the Yerima Wamba, a former senator, Federal Republic of Nigeria described the book as a pathfinder for workers. “This book will show the way of blissful retirement to workers. It will help all who care to read it and practice what it teaches to enjoy life after retirement” he stated. Director General of the NDLEA, Mr Femi Ajayi who wrote the forward bought copies for the libraries of the Agencies in all State commands. The 142 page book has fourteen chapters capturing types and methods of retirement, agonies of retirees in Nigeria, techniques in retirement planning and factors detrimental to savings among others. In his speech, the author said that he was motivated to write the book because of the agonies of retirees and family members of deceased workers. “The bitter truth is that workers find it difficult to make ends meet even while in service and the situation becomes worse at retirement when they fail to plan while still in service” Yahaya noted. Aliyu Yahaya Omba hails from Wamba, Nassarawa State in the North Central of Nigeria. He was born into the family of Alhaji Yahaya Omba (Late Hakimin Wamba) about 50 yrs ago. Mr Aliyu Yahaya started his early education at the Local Education Authority Primary School from 1970 to 1976 and Government Secondary School (GSS) Wamba from 1976 to 1981 where he obtained his First Leaving School Certificate and West African School Certificate respectively. He attended School of Preliminary Studies Keffi for his Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMB) from 1984 to 1986 and Ahmadu Bello University from 1986 to 1989 where he holds a Bachelor of Science Bsc in Accounting. He is a member of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN). Aliyu Yahaya started his working career with Janaz Bureau De Change, Osolo Way Lagos, immediately after his Youth Service in 1991 and rose to the position of Branch Manager at Kano Branch of the Bureau De Change from 1991 to 1994. He was enlisted into the Superintendent Cadre of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in 1995. He served as the Principal Staff Officer (PSO) from 2000 to 2003 in the Pensions & Insurance Department of NDLEA at National Headquarters, Ikoyi, and Lagos before he was redeployed to head Finance Department of the Directorate Administration and Finance within the same organization. Currently he is the Assistant Director (Finance and Accounts) and a member of NDLEA Staff Pension Scheme Board of Trustees from 2003 to date. Aliyu Yahaya has attended several seminars/workshops including Pensions and Retirement Planning as follows: Workshop/Seminar for Officers Responsible for Pension Matters organized by Office of the Head of Service of the Federation (Establishment and Pensions) in collabration with Crown Agents United Kindom at Institute of Policy and Strategies Studies (NIPSS) kuru in September, 2002. National Workshop on Audit Practice and Management in Public Sector organized by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation in collaboration with the Society of Chartered Accountant in Public Sector in September, 2005. Training Programme on Microsoft Excell, Access, SPSS and Visual Dbase organized by Computronic Technologies Limited in February, 2006. National Policy Training workshop on Implementation of Fiscal Responsibility Act (2007) on Public Internal Financial Control System organized by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation in collaboration with the Leading Edge Academy in September, 2008. National Seminar on Implementing e-payment in Government in Nigeria organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria ( Akure District Society) in April, 2009. Training Programme on information Communication, Presentation and MOSS 2007 organized by Computronic Technologies Limited in July, 2009. Seminar on Financial Control, Auditing and International Financial Reporting Standard organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria( Lagos and District Society) in September, 2011. Continuing Professional Education (CPE) on Planning and Managing Retirement organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria( ICAN) in November, 2011.
