Dalton/Rainy Day areas of Pecos Need your Help!! Be there November 9th!!!! Call for Volunteers The Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited has an opportunity coming up for volunteers to work on riparian habitat restoration/protection along the Pecos River. This a rescheduling of a Santa Fe National Forest project that was cancelled because of the recent government shutdown. The project is on Saturday November 9. The Santa Fe National Forest has received a grant to help protect the Pecos riparian area around the Dalton Creek/Rainy Day area. This area has been heavily abused by dispersed campers over the years and the SNF wants to restrict access to camping along the river side of Highway 63. The project primarily involves placing wooden bollards (probably 8 diameter by 5 ft long) and building wooden fence. The fence posts and rails will be significantly lighter than the bollards. All holes for bollards and fence posts will be dug by an auger the SNF will provide. Since the work site is right along the road, we wont have far to carry the materials. While the bollards are heavy, one person can carry them with some effort; but two people makes it easy. So the work will involve just modest lifting and light shovel work to clean out the augered holes, dropping the bollards/posts into the holes and backfilling. With a good turnout we can easily divide up the labor so no one does anything they are uncomfortable with. The fencing the Forest Service has is the kind with the rails fitting into slots in the upright posts. So there shouldnt be hammering involved. Well also be installing some signage. The work surface is fairly flat; so easy to work in. This is an excellent opportunity to show the SNF and specifically the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District Trout Unlimiteds commitment to this important watershed. The time of day hasnt been set yet but we probably be starting between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. and work until 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. The Forest Service grant has a matching component. So your hours will help toward that match commitment. This watershed is in our backyard, the site is less than an hour from Santa Fe, so let’s have a big turnout. While we strongly encourage TU Truchas Chapter members to volunteer, the events are not just restricted to TU members. So if you want to bring along any family or friends they are welcome. Come even if you cant stay for the whole time. For this project, the Chapter will be providing lunch to show our appreciation to the volunteers. So please RSVP to either Art Vollmer, fish4rgct@gmail or 505-474-1495, or Bill Zenger, [email protected] or 505-466-6343, so they can plan accordingly.
