Dan Cushman wrote dozens of books, was best known for his 1953 novel Stay Away, Joe, which was made into a movie starring Elvis Presley. The books portrayal of American Indians, especially that of the protagonist, a lusty rogue, aroused controversy in Montana. His books were often set either the South Pacific, the Congo or the Yukon, and he drew on his colourful life for much of his fiction. He worked as a cowboy, a printer, a prospector, a geologists assistant, an advertising writer and a radio announcer. Jasmine scented Polynesian beauties in bikinis with exotic flowers tucked behind one ear were a solid sales trope of the period perhaps reaching its peak with the Marlon Brando version of Mutiny On The Bounty which solidified these South Seas sirens as proven paper movers. We will certainly revisit Cushman as he travels the literary globe but today lets focus on his South Pacific themed oeuvre. Jewel Of The Java Sea (1959) was a Barye Phillips cover who also did the art for Naked Ebony (1951). The Dell First Edition of The Half Caste from 1960 has art by Robert McGinnis. I dont know who did the cover for Jungle She (1953) so get cracking scholars!
