Dan Lichter drew a conclusion at his lecture hosted by the The Carsey Institute that these small towns and cities will have high levels of latino/latina immigrants that will be working in the meatpacking industry. The subsequent social and political dynamics in those towns are tough to foresee but suppose we could look into history. When a marginalized population moves into a place over a relatively short period of time and becomes the largest minority, what happens to the taxpayers perspective on community economics and development? Will they be scared? Will they act out of spite? Will the tensions even be brought to the attention of the American people given these are rural towns and cities with economies based on meatpacking, an industry that cannot be anywhere closely associated with dignity?
