Danbury educator selected for ‘Teachers for Global Classrooms’ - TopicsExpress

Danbury educator selected for ‘Teachers for Global Classrooms’ program Melissa Nadeau, the Middle School STEM Department Head for Danbury schools, is one of 80 educators nationwide selected for the Teachers for Global Classrooms (TGC) program by the United States Department of State. More than 400 teachers applied for the acclaimed program. The goal of the TGC program is for educators to explore the themes and applications for global education in their classrooms. As part of the program, Nadeau will participate in an online professional development course, attend a Global Education Symposium in Washington, D.C., travel on an international fellowship for several weeks and be eligible for alumni professional development sessions and micro-grants. She will also have the opportunity to visit other schools and classrooms and share her culture and experience with host country colleagues during the 2014-15 program. “This selection is truly an honor of the caliber of professionalism of our staff and it will add greatly to our curriculum and student experiences,” said Danbury superintendent Dr. Sal Pascarella. “This is who Melissa is and she really adds a special value and dimension to our school system. This program will only serve to expand on that.” The goal of the program is to bring a broader understanding of ways to incorporate international perspectives and global education into the classroom. Nadeau, who is thrilled with being selected, said that she is concerned that students in the United States lag behind foreign students in knowledge of countries and cultures, and that learning a second language is not standard for every student. A focus must be placed on global literacy, she said. “It’s necessary to transform our learning systems to equip students with knowledge and skills they need to succeed in this global era. Knowledge of other world regions, cultures and global issues is essential for global literacy,” Nadeau said. “I have always been honored to work in a public school system that is rich in cultural and ethnic diversity. The biggest asset of our district is the people and the differences they bring to our classroom. Through my experience with TGC, I hope to design curricula that create a microcosm of the world and have students learn to interact effectively with people of many ethnic backgrounds.” #Danbury Board of Education#
