#DanceTFestival Dance in the City | 31st October, 6pm A discussion panel about the challenges, opportunities and the potential of contemporary dance in a city like Kampala. How can the city as physical space and as potential audience be approached by contemporary dancers? How can dance interact with the cultural life of the city – and become more part of its fabric? Can contemporary dance be read by an audience – does it have to be read by the audience? Can contemporary dance be local, regional, international? Is contemporary dance always contemporary dance – here, elsewhere and everywhere? On the panel: Gaby Saranouffi (Madagascar) is a dancer, choreographer, and dance teacher. She is currently Artistic Director of the International Festival of Contemporary Dance « I’TRÔTRA » and the VAHINALA Company. She lives and works in Madagascar. Olivier Tarpaga (USA/ BF) is a dancer-choreographer, musician-songwriter and performing arts consultant based in Columbus, Ohio. He is also the Co-artistic director of Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project. Themba Mbuli (South Africa) is currently a Freelance dancer/choreographer and a part time dance teacher for the Western Cape Education Department, creating choreographic works, teaching and performing dance in South Africa and abroad… Jonas Byaruhanga (Uganda) is a dancer, choreographer and teacher based in Kampala. In 2004, Jonas founded Keiga Dance Company, which has developed into one of East Africa’s leading dance companies. Since 2010, Jonas directs the Dance Transmissions Festival. The discussion is moderated by Melissa Kiguwa (Uganda). Melissa Kiguwa is a blues writer, a performer, a social critic/analyst and a radio personality. Her poetry and essays have been published in various magazines and media platforms including The Feminist Wire, Love Your Rebellion Zine, etc. Melissa is currently working on launching her brain-child, The GMT +3, an online East Africa based analytical news and reporting collective. She has performed on a number of international stages including Uganda’s Bayimba International Festival of the Arts. She further co-hosted Season One of the Unicef funded television program, U-Report and is a radio presenter at Kampala’s leading English speaking radio station, Sanyu FM.
