● Daniel Merriam is a prolific contemporary, watercolor surrealist. ● His curiosity, adventurous nature and sense of humor seem to capture, whisk and pull viewers into an imaginative realm of intertwined thoughts, dreams and details of structured things and fanciful landscape (my own interpretation). ● I first discovered Daniel Merriams work in 2002-- and recognized him as (probably) one of the greatest watercolor artists I have ever seen. ● In 2003 I wrote to him concerning his thoughts and inspiration for creating one particular watercolor which I was especially fond of-- ● a nun walking through surreal imagery of nature, secularism and worldly aspects of a worrisome humanity. ● He cordially responded, saying that he watched from his San Francisco studio window, nuns walking steadfastly to church and schools each morning. ● Then, he wondered to himself, what it was that they would pray for first-- amidst much human and worldly problems, angst, politics and war (my words and phrasing, here). ● Yes, I wonder about such things, too. ● When I was in a Santa Fe art gallery, I was caught by a display of a dozen or so of Merriams paintings. Indeed...today, Im certain this man can paint and airbrush watercolors as easily as I can sign my name. ● He surely must be one of the most prolific artists of all times. ● He has (at least) five published books, with narrative explanations of his images, skads of postcard printings, and several calendars. ● Alas, even the calendars are priced near $50.00 and up-- so that I have never attempted to collect his work.
