Dar calabazas a alguien, a Spanish proverb meaning to reject someone, sounds very strange if translated literally: to give someone pumpkins... Do you know of proverbs that are odd when translated? I can think of a few: Lachen als een boer met kiespijn: smiling like a farmer with a toothache (hes smiling, but hes not happy). Nu komt de aap uit de mouw: the monkey comes out of the sleeve (now we know whats going on). Dat kan je op je buik schrijven: you can write that on your stomach (you can forget about it).
