Dara Coffey Prayer Meeting Mary and Martha Official notes: Luke 10:38-42 Martha was a hostess extraordinaire; she was always prepared and ready to receive Jesus and His disciples. She was never caught off guard. Her home, meals, life, etc. were always prepared to receive a visit from the King of Kings. John 11:5 now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister and Lazarus. We know Jesus is love and therefore loves everyone. So why point out the obvious and why list Martha first? Why would Jesus frequent visits to their house at Bethany? Because Jesus was always made to feel welcome. He was the center of attention in their home. Is He in yours? In your life? John 10:17-44 Martha didnt wait for Jesus to come to her...she ran out to meet Him. She pursued Him. Luke 10:39 and she had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lords feet and was listening to His teaching. Mary more than and other individual in the New Testament was associated with Jesus feet. John 12:1-3 These acts give creditability to Marys humility, reverence and hunger for spiritual knowledge. This was Marys position as she eagerly desired to be taught by The Lord. We must be vigilant, accepting and ready to worship our lord and savior through service to him as Martha did, but remember not to let the task override the importance of fellowship with the task giver. My notes: Both Mary and Martha were lovers of Christ, spiritually speaking. They had two different walks in their salvation. Martha was always ready for company, especially Jesus. Martha was an organizer and preparer. She was great in hospitality. Martha was ready in season and out. Mary was quiet. She was always at the feet if Jesus. She didnt worry about doing anything but listening to and loving Jesus. She was compassionate. She is the one who broke the alabaster box an anointed Jesus. Mary was usual silent. Both ladies had a choice of what they would do and where they would be. The home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus was a home Jesus frequented often. Why? Because He was welcomed and loved. He was made comfortable. He was honored. Jesus thought of their place as home. Mary would sneak away from helping Martha to go listen to Jesus. When Lazarus died they were all in the house crying. Martha heard Jesus was coming. She got up and ran out to go greet Him. He told her to bring Mary who was still inside crying. Mary told Jesus that if He had been there Lazarus wouldnt have died but that she trusted Him that everything would be good. This was the only time recorded that Mary spoke. Martha invited Jesus and served Him. Mary followed and engaged Him. We cannot allow the tasks to override our fellowship with the Task Giver, Jesus. It isnt so much the quantity of time we give Jesus but its the quality we give Jesus. Have a balance of Marthas heart and Marys heart within us.
