Darlie Lynn Routier has been on Death Row in Gatesvile, Texas since February of 1997. This despite a case against her that was, at best, circumstantial and filled with inexcusable errors by both prosecution and defense. It is impossible even to know with certainty what went on during her 1996 trial, as the existing transcript of the procedings contains over 32,000 documented errors. At the time of Darlies trial, a great deal of evidence was not tested, not presented at trial, and in some cases appears to have been hidden from the defense. Since then, new evidence has been discovered, advances in forensic testing have made possible the examination of items that were not tested, and it has become obvious that Darlie is innocent of the crime for which she has now served 17 years under the harsh conditions of Death Row in a maximum security prison. On July 18th, 2014, a court ordered the immediate release of eight evidence items for DNA testing. This comes after years of stalling and refusals by the state of Texas and even during some judicial proceedings. The new testing will almost certainly prove Darlies innocence and help bring about her long-overdue freedom and return to her family. Darlie has never been able to grieve properly for her two murdered sons. She has lost her husband, and her oldest son, Drake, is currently battling leukemia. She is, first and foremost, a loving mother and seeks only to clear her name and return to her family. As she is innocent of any crime, the time is long overdue for both to take place. While the actual testing of items recently released for examination will be paid for by the state, it is also necessary for Darlies attorneys to have their own expert present for the testing to insure that it is conducted in an honest and scientific manner. Her attorneys have represented her at no charge for many years after her family bankrupted themselves paying legal fees. The experts services, however, will cost approximately $8,000 and other expenses will bring the total cost to insure that this key evidence is examined fairly and placed before a court to approximately $15,000. Time is of the essence. Assuming the state complies with the order of the Court in a timely manner, we have approximately two months to raise the $15,000 and will need $8000 within 30 days. Darlies family and friends have in most cases spent their last penny in earlier efforts to free her. Now, as the best chance to date of clearing her name has arrived, we must ask you for help.
