Darren Fletcher was given a personal name check at the end of last season when Sir Alex Ferguson made his farewell Old Trafford speech. Twelve months ago, Fergie addressed the crowd and wished the Scottish midfielder a speedy comeback to the United first team as he battled his ulcerative colitis illness. In December, the 30-year-old finally made his return against Aston Villa at Villa Park and went on to make 12 starts for the Reds and six substitute appearances in total. Now he is looking forward to pressing on next season and is determined to put his case forward after his brief summer break to be a prominent member of manager-elect Louis van Gaal’s squad. “Anything was almost a bonus for me this season, i’d been out for such a long time and then such a gap from last summer to when I came back in terms of fitness and where the other lads were at. For me I looked at it as anything being a bonus but once you’re back your competitive nature takes over. “Now I’m really looking forward to a summer of keeping training and getting a good pre-season under my belt. I feel as if I’ve improved as the season has gone on and I hope I can continue doing that. “I think you can sometimes worry too much about the uncertainty of who the manager will be and players coming in and coming out. “It’s important to focus on yourself and make sure you come back for the new season in the right condition and, whoever is the manager, you have to try to impress him in pre-season and training. “It’s never been any different here – that’s always been my mindset. It’s a big squad with competition for places and you have to impress when you get an opportunity.” [Source: MEN]
