Dates for your diary - Leith Folk Club March dates for your diary - Leith Folk Club Hi Folks. Here are Leith Folk Clubs Listings for March 2014 25th The James Brothers £7 They are not really outlaws, neither are they brothers and only one of them is called James. They come from the lands down under – Australia and New Zealand to be precise; lands in which the traditional songs and tunes of the British Isles have evolved their own unique characteristics, like musical marsupials. And it’s these songs and tunes, and several of their own making, that the James Brothers have united to play. 4th Gavin Pennycook £7 Gavin will be launching his latest CD, Octave Fiddle – Baritone Violin. The CD, funded with assistance from Creative Scotland, is possibly the first ever to be devoted to the octave fiddle - a regular acoustic fiddle strung with octave strings, with a range between the viola and the cello, and a dark, ancient sound. Gavin was the first Scotsman to win an All-Ireland fiddle title, and his success at the Amber Fiddle Award 2012 means that he is probably the only fiddler ever to have won major solo competitions in both Scottish & Irish music. 11th Mairi Campbell £7 From her base in Edinburgh Mairi Campbell has worked all over the world and won many awards for her songs and masterful musicianship. As singer, violist and songwriter, Mairi shares songs and soundings, some improvised and some set into song. She has won many awards for her singing and as a tutor in traditional music. She makes a very welcome return to Leith. 18th The Revelers £9 The Revelers, founding members of the Red Stick Ramblers and The Pine Leaf Boys… “unquestionably the two groups at the vanguard of the Louisiana cultural renaissance” have joined together on there newest project which combines Swamp-Pop, Cajun, Country, Blues and Zydeco into a powerful tonic of roots music straight from Southwest Louisiana. We are very lucky to have them coming to Leith and we expect a sell out for this gig so get your tickets early. 25th Celter Schmelter £7 Featuring seasoned Edinburgh based musicians – Gica Loening fiddle, Jen Hill double bass, Fin Loening acoustic guitar, and Sharon Jacobsen, vocals, Celter Schmelter is a glorious mix of raucous, soulful, and sweet unadorned acoustic klezmer. They have been the social glue of many a Scottish/Jewish gathering, Bar Mitzvah and festival around the country over the last ten years. Let the music and song of Celter Schmelter transport you to the old world of the Klezmorim and Yiddishkeit – to a world of passionately felt music, sometimes haunting, often wild and raucous.. but always played from the heart.
