Dave and I watched in nearly stunned silence as this big fella grazed on clover right in front of the cars and pickup we used to separate us from this massive bull buffalo. If you listen intently, you will hear him ripping the ground cover right off the earths surface.. Impressive and a bit humbling at the same time; intimidating yet non threatening as we watched cautiously knowing they can run at 35 mph for great distances. And charge without warning. I tried to keep the pickup bed in close proximity as a place to jump into if needed. Later we spoke with a Park Ranger and he told us many folks do not heed safe distance, yet animal agression is rare. These wild critters have been around countless people and seem to have adapted well to our presence. They appear non threatened by human closeness and even choose to approach vehicles and people with no fear. The public is advised to keep a 25 yard distance from any wild animal in the park. Not at all like any encounter with wildlife on the prairie or farm that I have experienced before .......
