David Cameron and Alistair Darling are to place British identity - TopicsExpress

David Cameron and Alistair Darling are to place British identity at the centre of the Unionist case against independence by attempting to convince the English and Scots they are part of the same family. Sources close to the Prime Minister confirmed he will ask the English members of his Cabinet to “spread the word” about the benefits of the UK in their constituencies. Despite admitting there are some “little Englanders” or “Nigel Farage types” who would prefer to see Scotland separate, they insisted that the vast majority of people south of the Border have a love for Scotland. Mr Cameron hopes the initiative will help make clear to undecided Scots that they and the Union are valued by the English. A similar effort was seen as crucial in narrowly persuading the people of Quebec to remain part of Canada in a 1995 referendum. Meanwhile, Mr Darling, the leader of the pro-UK Better Together referendum campaign, will today use a major speech to focus on the “sentiment and belonging” attached to the British identity. telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/scotland/10172414/David-Cameron-urges-English-to-help-fight-against-Scottish-independence.html
