David Rearick Launches Bodacious Dream on Solo Circumnavigation Skipper of Class 40 Racing Sail Boat to Begin Worldwide Educational Adventure Bodacious Dream Expeditions to Provide Digital ‘Classes’ on Oceans and Sailing on its Nine-Month 30,000-Mile Journey Newport, Rhode Island – The Bodacious Dream continues onward and upward and is now going truly global –- and digital – starting on October 2, 2013, when her skipper, David Rearick, will begin a solo nine-month 30,000-mile circumnavigation of the globe, launching from Newport, Rhode Island. The circumnavigation will be an adventure in learning and discovery, with Dave introducing the wonders of the ocean and the many demands of sailing and sailcraft through regular story and media updates – all part of a new initiative called Bodacious Dreams Expeditions that is designed to bring to digital life Dave’s daily experiences while on his journey. Dave and the Class 40 Racer Bodacious Dream have already competed in five major races in the US and Europe leading up to this trip, including the two American Atlantic Cup Races, the Canadian Transat Quebec-St. Malo Race and then both the Normandy Channel Race and Mondial Class 40 World Championships in France. Dave has also sailed solo across the Atlantic last fall. “Bodacious Dream has proven herself on the competitive front over the last year and now I will begin the solo journey around the globe, looking to bring the adventures home through the online Bodacious Dream Expeditions,” said Rearick. This time around, however, the solo expedition can be viewed online (bodaciousdreamexpeditions) and all can learn with Dave and his network of teachers, scientists and organizations such as his partners at Earthwatch Institute and Hurricane Island Outward Bound School through videos and the accompanying “Explorer Guides,” which include fun and engaging worksheets with specific questions, facts and details on specific subjects and regions through which he sails. “Believing that some of the most valuable learning follows from sharing engaging experiences, we will be complementing our real-life journey and reports en route with our study materials as well as with direct interaction, so that younger minds can visually and experientially participate in our expeditions and so learn to apply that to more traditional education methods,” said Rearick. Dave leaves Newport for Cape Town, South Africa, then onto Wellington, New Zealand, followed by Cape Horn, South Georgia Island, the mouth of the Amazon and back to Newport with some additional remote stops along the way. About Dave Rearick Dave Rearick has been sailing and racing the Great Lakes and coastal waters since his childhood. He has won many events, and held records including the single-handed Mackinac race from Chicago to Mackinac Island, as well as the Solo Super Mac – a single-handed race from Pt. Huron, Michigan, to Chicago (600 miles!). Dave began sailing at age 12 on the family Sunfish along the southern shores of Lake Michigan. He grew up racing Hobie Cats, Lasers and the Sunfish until relocating to Maine at age 20, and taking a job with the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School in Rockland. Sailing in Maine took Dave aboard more traditional craft like open pulling boats and large schooners with lots of variations in between. Since returning to Indiana in 1980, Dave has sailed and raced many boats, from J 24’s to Open 50’s on the Great Lakes and both coasts. On the Great Lakes, Dave is most often associated with the well-known boat Geronimo. On Geronimo, along with all the various crewed races, Dave was able to pursue his passion for single-handed sailing. Since then, he has competed in many races including seven single-handed Chicago-Mackinac races and two single-handed Super-Mac races between Chicago and Port Huron, MI. Dave is a lifetime member of both the Lake Michigan Single-handed Society and the Great Lakes Single-handed Society. Along with his many placings in various races, the most meaningful award presented to him came in 2004, when fellow members of the Great Lakes Single-handed Society awarded him the Mike “Laughing Gull” Silverthorne Award for the “sailor most exemplifying the spirit of single-handed sailing.” Likely the highest achievement a sailor can receive is the respect of his fellow competitors. In 2002, Dave helped fellow single-handed competitor, Tim Kent, to prepare his boat Everest Horizontal to compete in the Around Alone Race - a race which pitted the best international sailors in a 27,000-mile single-handed race around the world. Dave has also worked with and helped a number of other Solo Ocean Racers prepare for their races, which will serve as valuable preparation for this upcoming circumnavigation. About Bodacious Dreams Expeditions Bodacious Dream Expeditions are voyages of discovery and learning that bring the wonders and excitement of traveling the world’s oceans right into your home for you to enjoy and learn along with us. Over Bodacious Dream’s satellite Internet connection, we send along regular updates, along with photos and videos from wherever we are at sea. We use these materials to support our trip plan as well as the Explorer “Study” Guides that we create for each expedition. Since our launch in March of this year, we have completed three expeditions. (Click on the links here to read Dave’s recaps and to access the accompanying stories and media.) Our first Bodacious Dream Expedition was of the Baja Peninsula. Our second happened concurrently to the 2013 Atlantic Cup Race in May, and the third, concurrent to the June 2013 Trans-Pac Race from California to Hawaii.
