Its a BLIZZARD out there! Much as I love the brutal beauty of a New England Winter - one cant help but pause to dream of more exotic locations to recharge the batteries and get some color! During the 1700’s, there was a small cay off the northwest tip of New Providence Island, called West End Cay, (later Lyford Key) named after William Lyford, Jr., who in 1788 was granted 448 acres by King George III in return for his unwavering support as a Loyalist. The allotted land grant included the cay and additional acreage across the channel on the mainland. Over time, the channel separating the cay from the mainland filled and became part of New Providence Island. Both portions of the allotted land grant would become a portion of what we now know as Lyford Cay. Lyford Cay is a private gated community located on the western tip of New Providence Island, Bahamas. Considered one of the worlds wealthiest and most exclusive neighborhoods, the Lyford Cay Club was built during the latter part of the 1950s by prominent Canadian businessman Edward Plunkett. Club members, most of whom hail from Britain, Canada, Cuba, France, Greece, Ireland, Switzerland, and the United States can use a par-72 golf course, twelve tennis courts, a full-service marina, dining facilities, a post office, a private international school, and a mile-long private beach. Notable residents include the following: Louis Bacon (hedge fund businessman), Nicholas F. Brady (the former Secretary of State), the Bacardi family, Sean Connery (actor), Samantha Gregory (Manhattan socialite), Paul Hallingby, Jr. (managing director emeritus of Bear Sterns & Company), R. Couri Hay (Couristan carpet heir and the society editor of Palm Beach magazine and Hamptons magazine), Mark Holowesko (CEO and President of Templeton Capital Advisors, Ltd), Heidi Horten (Austrian businesswoman), Viktor Kozeny (Czech fugitive financier), Joseph Lewis (British businessman), George P. Livanos (Greek shipping tycoon), George S. Livanos (Greek shipping tycoon), Sean Mulryan (Irish property developer), Sandra McConnell (Avon heiress), Peter Nygard (Canadian fashion executive), Dr. Sir Tony OReilly (Irish media tycoon) and his wife Chryss Goulandris ( Lady OReilly, a horse breeder and shipping heiress), Pete Stadler (Equity owner of Kansas City Royals, co-inventor of the Pimms Cup) and Corey Hart (Canadian Singer/Songwriter)
