David Sparks UPDATE! Its been a looonnnggg week!! We never anticipated another week long hospital stay when we made David go to the hospital on Monday. What I thought might be a reaction to radiation treatments actually turned out to be more cancer growth and spinal compression. Add to that a very high calcium level in his system, and what you have is a very loopy guy in a great deal of pain. With all of the tests theyve done this week they also discovered fluid around his right lung. They drained almost a full liter from around his lung on Tuesday. We were informed today that pathology testing confirmed that the fluid also has cancer involved. The hits keep on coming. Its been difficult to grasp all that has been thrown at him this week. It leaves your head reeling. But we also know that cancer, especially an aggressive form like Renal Cell, moves with a mind of its own. My heart breaks for David, for our kids, and for me too. I still look at him as the guy that can conquer anything, and always with a deep joy in his heart, and a smile on his face. Guess what? While he has had his moments this week, he still is finding the silver lining with each new day. He still treats every single person with respect. He still is the lifesaver for us, the anchor in the midst of the squalls that seem to hit us from every side. He still entertains, still asks others what he can pray for for them, and still relies wholly on the One who sustains us all. David will be going to Frazier again in the next couple of days. He is actually doing really, really well. He was able to receive the rest of his radiation treatments, which coupled with the high dose steroids he is taking, has given him great relief from his back pain. Hallelujah! I love to see him feeling more like himself, more normal. They talked about putting a catheter/drain into the lining of his lung for any new fluid build up that might occur. But, there is not enough fluid accumulated to warrant that drain at this point. They will do another X-ray or ultrasound next week to see if it will be necessary for him before he comes home. Their hope is that once we receive the sutint, (the chemo drug) which should be within the next week, it will help to dry up that fluid completely. There are still a lot of unknowns. I told David today I was hoping they would give us a firm prognosis today. He believes they just dont know what to say at this point. None of his doctors have seen a case like his. Is anyone surprised by that at all??!! There are things they can explain, and things they cant. There are issues they can fix, and some that simply cant be healed. Its difficult, its heartbreaking, and its devastating. It is not what we want. Its what is. With all of that being said, we are not without hope. We are not simply accepting the things happening...David continues to look toward the future with the idea that we will love our kids the same as always, but maybe with more hugging and kissing involved. Well figure out new ways to get him around and moving. Simply put, he will continue to do, and be, and love, and enjoy life. Its who he has always been...cancer cannot change that at all. I apologize if I have not responded to everyones private messages this week. At points I didnt really know what to say, and at others I was too mad to say anything! Just know that they have been so sustaining, and the reminder I have needed of Gods presence even when I am wondering why Hes left me alone. He hasnt. Never did, and never will.
