David White: Any faith that depends upon a doctrine of biblical - TopicsExpress

David White: Any faith that depends upon a doctrine of biblical infallibility is a very weak faith, with no support whatsoever from the Biblical texts to support the doctrine. It is a doctrine that tries to force itself upon the Bible, rather than a doctrine that is reflective of the actual content of the text. Anyone who has the courage to simply pay attention to the first two chapters of Genesis can see the text includes different and even conflicting accounts of creation. The Gospels do not agree on several aspects of the Jesus story. Matthew has Jesus in Egypt at the same time Luke has him in Nazareth. In Matthew, Mary and Joseph are natives of Bethlehem. In Luke they are from Nazareth. John has Jesus crucified on Thursday. Matthew and Luke on Friday. In Samuel it is God who causes David to take a census of the people to determine who is available for military service, then punishes him for doing it. In the Chronicles it is Satan who temps David to take the census. You could not have a more conflicting two versions if you intentionally tried. Those who put the scriptures together for us did not try to resolve these differences. They recognized the importance of including the various and differing traditions. Fundamentalism is THE HERESY of the last century. It is a doctrine that actually demands intentional ignorance from those who accept it.
