David and I are at the Nicklin family summer home on Shelter - TopicsExpress

David and I are at the Nicklin family summer home on Shelter Island. Kate, his mother, is dying; she came up here on Sunday with her daughter , Sarah, and it quickly became apparent that she was failing. She is in hospice care, plus both David and Sarah are physicians. In fact Sarah is the head of a hospice program back in Allentown, PA. grandma Kate just celebrated her 90th birthday 3 weeks ago! Although her health has been failing since March, she seemed to make a good recovery, at least of her mental capacities after a three week stay in the hospital and a move to assisted living at Medford Leas, where she has been in an apartment for the last 10 years. She was in realistically good shape to attend her granddaughter, Mollys wedding on June 28th, and was in even better form for the celebration of her 90th birthday on July 19th! With Sarahs help she was able to make it to her life-long friend, Shaindys 90th birthday party last Sunday, but upon getting to her beloved house on shelter Island, she began going back downhill fast. The family is gathering, she is surrounded by those she loves and who love her. She has not opened her eyes or eaten or been able to swallow for at least 24 hours. She is transitioning out of this life and into the next. We are all at peace with this, as it is how she wanted it. She is in no pain, seems comfortable and deeply intent on doing the inner/spiritual work of dying to this world and being born into whatever comes next- what we call heaven.
