David and I were talking earlier about how many brilliant artists (comics, actors, poets, writers, etc....) take their own lives. They all had exceptional minds, but they all also had personal demons that won out over their will to live. It breaks my heart. Sometimes I can understand a desperate unhappiness that seeks respite via death, but then love for family and friends can usually pull people back from the precipice of going over the cliff. Those that do opt out of life, just couldnt bear prolonging their misery to stay strong for their loved ones. The pain of depression can be all consuming and the drive to end that pain can lead to tragedy. Using death to achieve freedom from the suffering leads to suffering for their loved ones whose souls and hearts are left with that gaping hole that can barely be filled with scar tissue. The moment the sufferer is set free, is the moment that many, many lives are changed forever. I hope and pray that research will continue and will make enough progress to preserve all lives in a pain free existence.
