Day 11 - It was finally surgery day, July 27, 2012. We had looked forward to this day for ten months... but when the day came, we didnt want it to happen. Karsyn was so happy the morning of surgery, little did she know her little world was about to be rocked. The doctor told us to expect a 4 to 6 hour surgery, luckily the nurse told us that he gets so involved in the surgery he looses track of time, so expect surgery to be 6 to 8 hours. Thank goodness she told us that because her surgery actually took 10 hours. The ent doctor put the tubes in her ears first, and then the plastics doctor started doing his magic! The ent doctor came out after he got the tubes in. He said that Karsyn won the hardest set of tubes he had ever put in, and he had put in a lot of tubes! Children with down syndrome tend to have a smaller ear canal and you add the cleft on top of that... he had his work cut out for him. He said normally tubes take about twenty minutes, not Karsyn, it took him 1.5 hours. The ent doctor said he actually walked away from the operating table and said , I cant do this! Then he said, This poor child cannnot hear and without tubes we do not know if she will need hearing aids! The dear lord was looking over the doctor that day because he finally got the tubes placed. He said, It was pure luck because I just dropped the tubes and hoped they landed in the correct place! The rest of the day we just sat and waited for her to get out of surgery. So many people asked me how in the world did you make it through that long of a surgery? It was all in the surgeons hands. He is an amazing person. I had so much faith in this surgeon, that I knew Karsyn was in good hands. If this doesnt explain the surgeons character to a T... After a 10 hour surgery at 8 pm on a Friday night, and keep in mind.... this was his last patient before a month long vacation... the surgeon himself came out and talked with us. He said the surgery went very good and he was pleased with the results. Then he went on to talk about his vacation he was getting ready for. He talked to us for a good 20 to 30 minutes. I do not know too many doctors that would do that! He is AMAZING! Below is the first picture of Karsyn the night before, the second is right before she was taken back to surgery, and the third was the first time we saw her after surgery!
