Day 11: Creating new music. It seems crazy but one of the hardest things to success is keeping motivated with your little successes. I had a client one time who was so depressed all they saw was filled with darkness & negativity. After months of traditional therapy failing, I gave the homework to notice what was positive or felt good, and just to make a note about that, and to describe the times, the circumstances, the people involved and what made it feel good for next session. Faithful to the exercise they did, and next session I gave them the homework to keep up with how long or how short these lasted. Again, my client was able to focus on this, enough that I finally asked them to see if they could make such moments last longer, by one minute, ten minutes, or as long as they felt able. My client went from claiming their life was 10% positive/ 90% Negative, to 20/80 in week 2, to 30/70 in week 3, to eventually a 70/30 balance in the other direction a few months later. Just from noticing the music they wanted, it became possible to have more, and this client graduated from treatment. So, are you noticing the new music? Are you keeping that beat? Sometimes holding even with your gains is keeping the pace. Sometimes realizing that one step back, doesnt totally undo two steps forward is the measure of the music.
