Day 12 - Tour Rome on our Own Today was our last full day to do - TopicsExpress

Day 12 - Tour Rome on our Own Today was our last full day to do things in Rome. We got up and had the breakfast buffet in the hotel restaurant. After which, we returned to the room to plan our day. We looked at the map and decided to board the City Sightseeing Roma Hop-On-Hop-Off Tour. We decided to walk to the bust stop which was about 3/4 of a mile away. Grandma liked the sights, but thought I was working to hard pushing her. We go tot the bus and I bought a ticket. We we able to grandma on for free with my paid admission. We got on near the Vatican and began going east towards the Trevi Fountain, Palazzo Barberini and the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyers. Next we traveled around the Santa Maria Maggiore Church on our way to the Colossium. We were going to get off and walk around, however it was raining and I did not want to get grandma wet. We then passed around Circo Massimo before going to The Pantheon. Our bus driver made an additional stop to let us off close to the Pantheon due to the rain. When we got about 30 feet down the road, it stopped raining. We continued down the road and came out at the Pantheon. It was very cool to go in a and walk around. The Pantheon was commissioned by Marcus Agippa during the reign of Agustus as a temple for the ancient Roman Gods, and rebuilt by emperor Hadrian. The open oculus in the center of the dome looks small, but is actually 27ft wide. THe Pantheon Oculus allows for rain to enter and fall on the floor, where it flows into drains. The rain aids the building in keeping cool during the summer. We then stopped for dinner at a little cafe in the square in-front of The Pantheon. Grandma had spinach and ricotta cheese ravioli and I had a 4-cheese pizza. Although grandma hates pasta, she enjoyed her ravioli. She figured that as long as you are on vacation, you should try things you might not normally eat. Tomorrow (Wednesday 9-11) is our long day. We first go to hear the Pope in the morning, then return to the Hotel for a mini nap, then head to the airport to fly to Amsterdam. We will check-in after we arrive in Amsterdam. Grandma/Chris
