Day 28 of The 100 Day Song Challenge: A really old song. The oldest song I can think of is Amazing Grace. This was written for a church sermon on New Years Day 1773, but was not published until 1779. The story of how it came to be written is pretty amazing - the guy who wrote it was a cynical atheist, press-ganged into the Royal Navy, who then worked on slave ships for years. During a storm that threatened to sink his ship, he cried out to God to spare the ship and lo! he was spatred. That, apparently, was the point where he started believing. It didnt stop him from slaving though :/ Anyway, I cant find a clip on YouTube from the 18th century, so heres a contemporary version., Enjoy!
