Day 30 - Sun 12th Jan: My turn to get up early, as working morning whilst Margaret has it off, Im off this afternoon ;-) Rolling around lots, meant beans spilt everywhere, eventually decanted to deeper pan! Gale force winds, and recording of 10.6 on helm means egg drop delayed. First time that it feels like Southern Ocean to me ;-) Finished just at lunch, caught up with emails, love getting emails - keeping in touch with outside world ;-) Played my crib league game but unfortunately lost :-( Midnight 2899nm 44°57.6S 129°40.2W. Midday ave speed 5.9knots, 137nm travelled. V rough sea with heavy swell Day 31 - Mon 13th Jan: Shock, change to ships routine! At 9am people set to sail trimming then smoke then Happy Hour ;-) Onions on board are so strong, that even after clearing the upper mess of onion chopping, poor Tam walked in and started crying! Other change, now on starboard tack - great for me, as no danger of rolling out of bed tonight, unless off course they change tack! Today went up on bridge to do met obs at 3pm. We feed our observations back, and as there are very few other ships, this helps in forecasting our weather. Talk today on Astrology Navigation made easy. Unfortunately most of us fell at first hurdle, simple arithmetic of adding and subtracting! Now 1/2 way between Chatham and Cape, between Pitcairn Islands and Antarctica, probably the only place on earth furthest away from any land ;-) Clocks back, so now 7hrs behind UK. Midnight 3053nm 44°50.8S 126°07.6W. Midday ave speed 6.5knots; 157nm day distance. Day 32 - Tue 14th Jan: Forgot about the last minute change in hour last night, but fortunately jumped out of bed just in time to serve breakfasts ;-) Tear in Spanker which means sail has to come down to be repaired :-( Reminded me of 10 / 11 years ago sail mending on Jersey Clipper. Another practice drill to reef the fore topsail again. Egg drop postponed again! Great to see more albatrosses again, theyve been absent. Midnight 3215nm 44°53.8S 122°23.6W, Midday ave 6.5knots, day distance 149nm. F5/6 with F8 early evening, with mod/rough sea and med swell Day 33 - Wed 15 Jan: Chocolate cake with gold sprinkles went down well at smoko! Very light and fluffy morning, as in high pressure system. Great news as the Great Egg drop took place at 1030, with great presentations by all the teams, far too many egg puns and even a sea shanty! Although Forward Port got their egg furthest aft, unfortunately it was broken :-( The winner was Aft Starboard, their device impaled on the azimuth compass, but egg still intact! Please note, the compass was not damaged, thankfully! Burgers for lunch, and after clearing up, put my bikini on for a spot of sunbathing! Unfortunately at one point, ship going backwards, so we had to wear ship. Lamb stew for dinner, followed by the popular marmalade bread & butter pudding. Then we were joined by a Wandering Albatross, who decided to bob in water, just a few feet away! Day 34 - Thur 16 Jan: Special dairy-free coffee cake today, as it is the second engineer, Tamsins 30th birthday :-) Veggie soup for lunch, and once all cleared up, made some biscuits in the shape of moon, stars and sun - celestial navigation made easy! Wrong tack for sunbathing, but when I asked Captain to change, he obviously declined my request stating we needed to get to Cape Horn! Chilli followed by mousse and grated choc - perk, ate the leftover chocolate! Midnight 3438nm 45°01.6S 117°17.1W Midday ave speed 3.5knots day distance 84nm :-( F4/5, dry but overcast Day 35 - Fri 17 Jan: Woke up at 3am, looked out my porthole to a glorious bright moon, stunning reflection easyon sea, with Jupiter visible too. Less than 2000nm to Cape Horn now, and a sweepstake to guess the time passing Cape Horn. Neils grand opening of the fiddles and boxes he has designed and crafted to hold our condiments and drinks ready for rough weather. Got all the food out of veggie locker, so we could give a good scrub ;-) still lots of carrots, onions, potatoes, squash, cabbage etc After lunch, made some cookies with stem ginger, some with cocoa, making chocolate swirls with the plain dough, and then some plain ones too ;-) Sweeney and Meg organised a great quiz tonight for all. Midnight 3604nm 45°36.2S 113°29.6W Midday ave speed 7.2knots 167nm travelled Day 36 - Sat 18 Jan: woo, New position on our third blank chart - i.e. with no land. However this is our last blank chart :-) Change again to ships routine - instead of happy hour at 9, sail trimming, with happy hour at 1030. Lots of onions for the messmen to slice today, as French onion soup for lunch. Good sort out in dry stores too. 4pm Sea Shanties enthusiastically sang by the good crew Lord Nelson. Chicken wrapped in bacon enjoyed by all, great mess team. Clocks forward an hour, so approx 6hrs behind. Movie night - State of Play. Midnight 3754nm 45°43.9S 110°12.7W Midday 6.5knots, day distance 158nm. F5/6 overcast drizzle, with mod/rough seas and low swell
