Day: 32 Date: Saturday July 6th Status: Alive Location: Xingping Saturday: Had incredibly good breakfast at a market with Shaoberlin and Paddy. It was an all local hole in the wall type of place – my type of place. Had some dumplings, buns, soymilk, dumpling soup and a fried dough stick to dip in the soy milk or in the soup. Dipping it in the soymilk reminds me of picarones Best breakfast so far! One horrible sight at the market: an old man was grilling a whole dog. You could see the fur and guts piled up to the side of the gas container. We went on a walk to find the landscape from the 20 Yuen bill. The scenery from the bill is here in Xingping. We also bought some snacks and fruits including a watermelon to have a picnic sometime during the walk. We indeed found the spot of the bill and after having seen all the stuff I have seen in the Guanxi province, seeing the scenery seemed so blah. It was just cool because it was on the bill. Shaoberlin and I continued walking towards a sacred mountain and Paddy went back to the city. We walked through villages and farms. I saw a few persimmon trees and though of @mariaesthervega. On the way I saw some more animal torture typical of this country D: They have the tendency to keep their animals alive until they decide to cook them but the big problem is that they don’t just keep tied up… they stuff them in plastic bags and make an opening for the head or snout so that the animal can breathe. That is it. The rest of the body is inside the plastic bag. It’s 90 F and humid and these poor animals are in agonizing heat inside the bag with only a small opening only big enough to have half the snout out. It is a super sad and frustrating sight. I wanted to get them out of the bag but of course I couldn’t. In this case, the victims were some pigs. All I could do was give them water and ignoring the pig owners frowning at me (and muttering who knows what in chinese) I poured some water on what was exposed of their snout to try to cool them down. It was bad. Later that night we had dinner at the place were Shaoberlin was staying. It was a feast with probably 10 different dishes. All were spicy so I only would try small quantities of everything. It was really cool trying so many dishes, although none of them were as good as my favorite from the night before. After dinner Paddy and I prepared our stuff to camp out in the mountain to check out the sunrise. End of log.
