Day 339 Lakota and Leonitis - As you can see Lakota is still - TopicsExpress

Day 339 Lakota and Leonitis - As you can see Lakota is still molting quite a bit and the dogs were a little bit more active today. It is still to hot for them to do much playing though, just a few laps around the yard then they want to go back inside where it is cool. I want to tell you a little bit tonight about our second longest resident in the PAWS program, Kokomo. When we posted that Lakota was now available for adoption everyone got sad and sounded like she would be leaving us in a matter of a week. This likely will not happen, Lakota could still be looking for her home for awhile, perhaps a long while as not all dogs do get adopted quickly and the fact shes an older girl and a big girl and her past is going to take her off of the list of a lot of people out there looking for a family pet. Kokomo is a prime example of how a dog can be up for adoption for years and no one has even made one inquiry about her. Kokomo (KoKo) came to us in the fall of 2009, just one month after the arrival of Cinnamon so Koko is second longest in our program by just a matter of weeks. Koko is now a 6 1/2 year old Pit Bull mix, I personally think shes mixed with a pointer as she is very barrel chested and has a slim waist. She is an absolutely, take your breath away, stunning looking girl when shes standing outside in the bright sunshine. She is one of the most naturally toned and perfectly muscled dogs Ive ever seen even after her surgery to remove a 5lb non cancerous mass from her chest. The Vet thought she likely would have to have her front leg amputated or would have very limited use of her arm as he had to remove 3/4 of her bicep, but she was SO naturally muscled that not only did she not lose her arm, she was running with no sign of limp within a few days of her surgery. Now other than a scar across her chest, youd never know that shed had a basketball hanging from her chest. Koko is not a dog without some challenges. She is another dog that would prefer to get to know a stranger before they reach out and try and pet her. She doesnt do well on car rides and wants to chase the cars as they go by even though when you take her for a walk she doesnt care about cars passing by. She has a little OCD when it comes to flashes of light or shadows...she loves them, her happiest moments in life are standing in the yard focused and wagging her tail waiting for the shadow of a bird to fly over the yard. She is on Prozac and that helps her have a bit more impulse control when it comes to things like that. Shes really a great girl, housebroken, gets along great with other dogs, does ok with some cats, not so great with others....very loving, very entertaining.... just not the perfect dog that so many people are looking for. Not one single inquiry about her in 5 years time. She too has been on book covers and been featured in National magazines. Not one inquiry. All rescues have long term dogs, you often know going in that a dog isnt going to be adopted quickly because as in Kokomos case they are black or they are a Pit Bull mix or they have some behavioral issues. It is very frustrating for us in rescue because we do get to know each of these dogs, it breaks are hearts that they either live here with us in our kennel type environment for years or if they are lucky enough to have a foster home, like Kokomo does, that they dont get anyone interested in them as we see what great dogs they are. I know this has been a rather long post but I want to let people know that while we certainly hope Lakota gets adopted quickly, the reality of doing rescue is that we are not always able to find homes for all of our dogs. That is why I originally started this blog of the day to day work we were doing with Lakota and Leo, to not only have a sort of diary for us to refer back on to see what progresses they made and when and what methods were used, but to hopefully help get them both adopted when the time came as we hoped that by getting the word out about them more people would be interested in them. I think that part of the experiment worked! More tomorrow!
