Day 39 So many things we still got to do and time is running out fast. The Rock, no not Niue or can you smelllllllllllllll what the. Nope not those Rocks, I’m talking about Alcatraz probably the most famous prison in the world. Man this place stinks. I don’t know where the smell comes from (probably the birds), but it is something bad. Thankfully when you are inside the prison it’s all good and that’s the best part about Alcatraz. We did the Cell house audio tour. And I have to say it’s a great experience well worth the trip. You get a little MP3 player with headphones, push play at the start line and you are on your way. The narrator leads you through out the prison, telling what life was like when you were a prisoner or an employee on the island. Gotta give props to who ever figured out this tour, It is extremely well written, very informative and the pacing is on point. The only time I had to pause was to take care of Kiyana. It is way better than any documentary, being able to walk through the real cellblocks and into actual cells is awesome. Serving time here would of sucked, cramped space especially in D-Block which is solitary confinement. If you were a guard though it was sweet as, they all lived on the island with their fam. They got killer views of the city and could jump on a boat and be back on the mainland under 15mins. They had the sweet life, unless you were one of the guards who got offed during the battle of Alcatraz (famous prison riot). That Shawshank movie is obviously based on the 3 inmates who made it off the rock. Did they survive the water? No one knows for sure. There have been some reports of people claiming to be their kids though, so who knows. The prohibition era brought in a lot of famous gangsters. You had Bumpy Johnson, The Birdman, Machine gun Kelly and Al Capone to name a few. We got to watch some Americas cup from the ferry and the island. I could see team NZ whizzing around the bay. I hope they were leading because they were miles away from the other boats that were on the water. Even though it smells, we spent more than half our day on the rock. I would come here just for the amazing audio tour. You also get a breathtaking view of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge. Independence Day tomorrow, we’ve been told most of the city will be on lock down from 12 onwards. So we gonna find a spot to hang and enjoy the festivities.
