Day 4 of Downs syndrome awareness week!!! (feel free to SHARE!) Let’s talk about prenatal diagnosis, the medical profession, choices and termination. After all, over 90% of babies who are prenatally diagnosed with Downs syndrome are terminated. Why?! Actually, let’s not go there, lets talk about pizza instead. We’ve all been out to eat pizza, right? Been with friends, seen other patrons of the pizza establishment eating? Well I for one have never stood up and shouted “YOU MUST EAT PEPPERONI!! YOU MUST, YOU MUST, YOU MUST!!!”. But I can’t lie, I look at people who eat Hawaiian and think they are losing out on flavour. Bleurgh. Not to my taste, but I would not think about telling them they are wrong, why would I? I can say I dont agree with their choice, but I wouldnt force them to eat pepperoni. We are all different and what suits one person doesn’t suit another. So imagine my surprise when a few years ago (3 years, 9 months and 2 days ago to be precise), I was introduced to a whole new pizza topping. I hadn’t ordered this pizza, it was simply delivered to me. It looked a little different and I thought “Wow!! What an opportunity!!” I cut a large chunk, shoved it in to my mouth and EUREKA!! HEAVEN!!! I was amazed, I had been waiting for this pizza all my life!! So off I went to tell everyone about this new pizza topping. My friends approached me with caution, this new pizza topping was different to what anyone had seen. It didnt take long for my friends to have a tiny try, a taster. Some thought it tasted good, others thought it tasted ok, but no one had the right to order this kind of pizza - it was only for the lucky random guests of the pizza parlour!! One of my friends admitted to being a touch jealous of my good luck. So I loved it and I needed to let the world know!! Try it, try it, try it!!! I found others who had been blessed with this surprise pizza and we were all in agreement, lovely stuff. So why oh why were people rejecting this pizza so freely? No idea. There are some people who have the pizza placed on the table in front of them and look at it with shock. Oh no!! What now!! Decisions, decisions... to bin it or not to bin it? But there was a problem... The waiters werent doing their job properly and so many of these surprise pizzas were being thrown in the bin!! What was happening? It turns out the waiters were coming out of the kitchens, plonking the pizza in front of the customers with a scowl on their faces. I am so sorry, this is not what you ordered, not what you were expecting. Do you want me to throw it in the bin? What are the waiters doing?! Wouldnt it be better if the pizza parlour offered some additional training to these waiters? Some customer service training? Wouldnt it be better if the waiters came out of that kitchen with this unexpected pizza and said (with a smile on their faces) You know what? This is not the pizza you were expecting, but I have heard good things about this pizza. There are bits on it which might be a bit spicy or a bit bitter, but on the whole the people who have eaten it claim it is amazing. Would you like me to give you some phone numbers? Some website addresses? Have a look in to it and have a think about it? This change in attitude might make some people think “what if?!” “WHAT IF?!!!” “What if I like it? I am hungry, I love pizza, I want pizza…. I am scared I will hate it. Will I lose my money if I take a bite?!” This is where we come in, this is where all of the people who have tried this pizza come in…. Don’t be scared. Don’t worry. You wont get food poisoning, you wont regret your choice. All we can tell you is that this pizza is the most glorious pizza you will ever eat. When you have eaten one, you will join the most amazing group of gastronomic pizza experts!!! But do you know what? If you spend a lot of time thinking about it, researching it, finding out from people what its really like and STILL choose to bin it and wait for your Hawaiian… then thank you for your time and consideration. I respect your palate. Pizza. We just talked out PIZZA.
