Day 407 Lakota and Leonitis - Leos first bath ever in his life. - TopicsExpress

Day 407 Lakota and Leonitis - Leos first bath ever in his life. Once again I know there are a lot of pictures but it does follow the progression of the bath and how he coped. As I had mentioned in a couple of prior posts, Leo had some tummy issues recently and he had been leaving us with a pretty messy run for a few days. We wanted to wait until he was feeling a bit better to do the inevitable, a bath as he had never had one since he came to us as we did not want to stress him out while we were working with him. With the advent of his tummy issues we knew it was time. Today was the day for his bath. We chose to do his bath inside and in a real bathtub rather than outside in the pen like we bathed Lakota. This was a pretty hard push for a feral dog and it could have gone wrong and set him back in his progress and in his trust in us. Luckily he did great! The first picture shows him right after he got in the tub when he basically shut down and laid down. We got him up and the pictures start off showing me holding him while Jenifer works the hose and the shampoo. Right around the time the lathering began, Leo visibly relaxed and I no longer had to hold him to keep him from trying to leap out of the tub. He wasnt thrilled, but he wasnt shut down and he wasnt panicking. We had one little relapse to fear when we had to turn him the other way to rinse his other side but that was short lived and he adjusted there as well. By the end of the bath he was standing tall in the tub, his tail wasnt tucked in fear, he was looking around the room and seemed fairly relaxed. Getting him out of the tub was fun and he ended up wagging his tail directly into my face and soaking me from head to toe. The last picture is of Leo after the bath and while we were trying to dry him off and yes the entire floor is drenched from Leos bath and our attempt to dry him (and us). Overall I am so proud of him, he did great! Leo really is coming into his own now and it will not be long before he is ready to go to his new home as well. More tomorrow!
