Day 59 I cant believe it is Friday already. Where has this week - TopicsExpress

Day 59 I cant believe it is Friday already. Where has this week gone?! Its amazing how quickly the weeks are flying past. Jacks oxygen requirement has stayed between 27% and 35% today, which is fantastic. They have decided that because Jacks oxygen requirement has improved so much he no longer needs two physiotherapy sessions each day. So from now on he will only have one session which will be prior to his 10am cares. Jack has continued to tolerate his three hourly 33ml feeds with barely any asprites. He is successfully sucking on his dummy during each feed but still cant suck enough to keep the dummy in his mouth. Jacks temperatures are still going up and down so its hard to know what to dress him in. Today Ive put him in a merino singlet I brought, which looks very cute. The nurse reckons he looks like hes off Footrot Flats, just needs the redband gummies!! (or wellingtons for my UK friends!). Mum has knitted him a gorgeous cardigan but tonight his temperature was high so hes only in his singlet. Jacks haemoglobin level was down to 91 today so the doctors decided to give him another blood transfusion. Once again they explained that its a fine line between giving him a top up of blood and letting it get low enough for him to start making his own red blood cells, which could cause him to have more events (desats and bradys). The latest blood tests however did show that this blood does contain some new blood cells so his body is beginning to produce its own. This afternoon the nurse specialist tried a number of times to insert an IV line into Jacks arm for his blood transfusion but unfortunately was unsuccessful so they will need to try again during the night. Jacks poor little arms and veins are just not coping with all these IV lines. Beside Jacks cot is a desk and drawers which contain everything that is needed for Jacks daily care. There is also his plunket book which the nurses write in occasionally. There is his chart and a folder where the nurses write detailed daily notes about Jacks care, the physiotherapist also records daily notes as do the doctors. Amongst other things there is a new (pink) page each week where the doctors record details. At the top of this page is a list of Jacks current problems. This list can change and different things added and taken away each week as necessary. A doctor mentioned to me today how great it was that Jack has gone from a minimum of 10 problems to only four this week. The four problems this week are 1. Preterm. 2. Chronic Lung Disease (on CPAP) 3. Odemia - puffiness 4. Left sided hernia. This morning I made cup cakes with some other mummys to celebrate one of their babies teaching the one kg mark. Then Marty arrived this afternoon and was very excited to see Jack in his cot for the first time. He was amazed at the difference in Jack in just a week with his significantly improved oxygen levels, milk intake and his increase in size.
