Day 6: Junin-Huanuco 180km We arose early to a very brisk 2 degrees C, and set about changing our oil! The oli in these bikes should really be changed every day and checked throughout the day especially on the mountain sections! We were a bit slacker than that though! Nick and Neil discovered a flat tyre when they checked their bike, and luckily a mechanics over the road had just opened. While they were getting the tyre changed, Zac decided to have his Mototaxi pimped out with some cool sounding multiple tune horns! We could here him coming now! One of the best things you can fit to these is a decent horn! We had stebel nautilus air horn that we brought with us, and it makes a difference in traffic when they can here you are there! Todays ride was very cold to start with, but gradually we peeled the layers off. We also crossed the highest pass of our entire ride at 4400 metres near Cerro de Pasco. The ride down from here was long and awesome, how I wished for a decent sports bike! We stopped along the way for a break and when we took off again, Perilous Piranahs bike was up in smoke and almost caught fire. A melted ignition unit behind the headlight! The wires were in too bad a state to repair and it appeared the ignition unit had suffered internal damage. I was going to re-wire it, but it was too far gone for repair. The boys headed up the road to a nearby town but no luck on an ignition module, so we simply removed it and started her up! I thought we may have to do some hot wiring to get the bike to go, but it was a simple case of removing it and kick starting her or shorting out the starter solenoid for electric start! They were back in action within the hour, although had no electrics for lights horn etc, but at least they could forge on ahead and ride the bike. We set forth once again passing spectacular scenery complete with lord of the rings style waterfall pouring out of a hole in the cliff face! AWESOME! We arrived in Huánuco right on peak hour in the middle of the Jesus festival! The traffic was insane and full concentration was needed! We headed right into the middle of town to the Plaze de Armas and stayed at the Real Hotel, once again Pisco sours and beers all round! Chinese for dinner, although Peruvian chinese is not quite the same! At a guess I think we had Chicken again! We were all pretty pumped as we knew that the Amazon was only a days ride away and we were keen to get into it!
