Day 63 (9 weeks today!) Jacks eye test went well this morning and - TopicsExpress

Day 63 (9 weeks today!) Jacks eye test went well this morning and he didnt get too upset. The doctor said his eyes were a bit more hazy than last week but were otherwise fine. He will have another test in two weeks. Jacks oxygen requirement was 23.8% when I arrived this morning. Room air, that we breathe, is 21% so obviously 21% is the lowest it can get. I was really excited to see him so low. He has stayed below 30% for most of the day. Unfortunately his oxygen requirement went from 30% to 36% during our cuddle this afternoon. I am starting to feel a bit upset that he hasnt been that relaxed during our cuddles lately. I dont know if its because hes not enjoying them, or because Im a bit unsettled due to my uncomfortable throat or just that we need to have more cuddles so he gets used to them again. He did settle down while I was reading to him which was great. Jack got really upset when his prongs were put in this afternoon. He was crying on and off for about 90 minutes before his nurse decided that she needed to swap him back to the mask. Tonight he was changed back to prongs again and only cried for about 5 minutes then settled so fingers crossed he will stay calm during the night. Tonight Jacks weight was 1866 grams, hes tripled his lowest weight. A few more days and hell be two kgs! Mum and dad got to see Jack during his weigh in, without any clothes on so were surprised to see how big he is getting. Its quite hard to tell with him all dressed up. Im really loving Jack being in a cot. I love that I can easily touch him and I can pick him up, even if it is only a few centimetres from his mattress because of all the pipes and wires! And the nurses are giving us more opportunity to do things like lift Jack over to the chair for a cuddle or over to the scales to be weighed. There has been some talk about Jack moving into a different room. The room he is in is the room for the most intense care babies. This room has no natural light. Where as the other rooms for the bigger/healthier babies are dark at night and have the blinds opened during the day therefore see daylight (and the occasional sun). This allows these babies to get used to the night/day difference. The nurses in our room often ask what the weather is like because they dont see outside for their whole 12 hour shift! Im not in any hurry for Jack to move. At the moment he shares a nurse with one other baby but in the big babies room he will share his nurse with a lot more babies. There are six bed spaces in our room and for the first time, there is only four babies so I dont think they are in any hurry to move him anyway. Im hoping that Jack will be able to have another bath tomorrow. Also tomorrow Jack has his immunisation injections so hopefully that wont be to upsetting for either of us.
