Day 83, June 27: Judges 1-3; Psalm 72; John 4 Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to a kings son. May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice. (Psalm 72:1-2) Prayer for the new king (Solomon, most likely), notice please, that the prayer requests that God give to the king the justice of God. This is not a justice that comes from humanity. This is Divine Justice. Justice comes from God. The prayer asks that the King would have this "justice", not a human justice. The United States of America is a curious place. When people run for office in the U.S.A. they want to demonstrate to the people that they are religious believers. In most cases that means Christian. Once the person is elected, well then… Woe to the atheist who runs for a higher office. Can you imagine an atheist running for president? Please do not think that I believe that faith is not important for a politician. I am saying that it is not the only criteria. I am also weary of politicians who make claims about their steadfast faith and the importance of God in their lives, who try to take away social programs that help the poor. In Psalm 72, we have a prayer for the new king. "Give the king your justice, O God" and may it be real, may it be authentic. May our leaders, civic and religious, be concerned about leading and not protecting their own power. **Tomorrow’s Readings - Day 84, June 28: Judges 4-6; Psalm 72; John 5**
