Day 9: 16 Days of Action Against Violence Against Women. One of the greatest humanitarian challenges facing us today is violence, in all of its forms. Violence causes major human, economic and community-development consequences. Its impact is long, deep and profound. Violence, including gender based violence, intensifies during disasters and while it is a complex issue, it should not be inevitable. It is predictable and preventable. Addressing the underlying causes and social determinants, such as gender inequality, misuse of power, poverty, discrimination and stigma can prevent, mitigate and reduce the risk of violence. The Irish Red Cross believes education is key and one of the best tools we have for changing mind-sets, attitudes and behaviours. Red Cross violence prevention programmes such as our ‘Ten Steps to Creating Safe Environments’ in the Maldives and Kenya and ‘Youth as Agents of Behavioural Change’ in Sri Lanka’ reach individuals in their formative years and promote healthier relationships and safer communities.
