Day 918. Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE FRANK PAGDEN 35061. Born - TopicsExpress

Day 918. Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE FRANK PAGDEN 35061. Born in Sheffield, and thats as much as I can confirm. His Army Death Notice spells his name Pagden whereas his Commonwealth War Graves record has it Pagdin a much more common spelling in South Yorkshire. To muddy the waters still further, he has been researched by a family who have mixed two separate men up as one and have him travelling the country for five decades before being killed in Flanders aged 51. This I doubt very much, though I may of course be wrong. There are many mistakes on the Ancestry website as families latch on to the wrong man and claim a war hero in their bloodline. I can see how easy this would be. Rather than the 51 year-old Frank Pagden, there is another Frank born in 1898 who seems a more likely candidate but I cant be certain so Im not going to make the same mistake. Whoever he was, Frank was killed in action on 12th April 1918 during the German Spring Offensive and his body was never recovered. His name, as Pagdin, is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
