Day Ten: Death By Audio Kill Kill Filter Death By Audio, in addition to being a live music space in Brooklyn, New York that is something of an indie rock mecca, is a pedal company created by Oliver Ackermann* from the very cool (and terrifyingly LOUD) rock band A Place to Bury Strangers. Their pedals are designed to make you feel like a bad ass. I mean, look at some of these names: the FUZZ WAR, TOTAL SONIC ANNIHILATION, SUPERSONIC FUZZ GUN, APOCALYPSE!! Makes me want to wear leather and smoke cigarettes. They kick a lot of ass, but they are a little pricey for the average working musician. I was initially drawn to the Kill Kill Filter because it was the first pedal from DBA that somebody in my tax bracket could realistically afford without selling an organ. Maybe this lower price point has something to do with its relatively simple design compared to some of the other more over-the-top effects DBA trades in. The Kill Kill Filter is basically two independent EQs that you can switch back and forth between via a footswitch. I wasn’t really sure what use I would find for it, but I decided to take a chance. And I’m glad I did because it has since proven to be a very useful little gadget. It works great before other dirt pedals or straight into an amp by itself as a boost, but where it really shines is after fuzz or distortion pedals. The Kill Kill Filter can inject even the blandest, non-descript Guitar Center mass produced pedal with attitude and personality. With a stomp of a button, suddenly your polite, well-behaved Boss DS-1 is combing its hair while whipping out a switchblade and demanding your lunch money. Instant Guitar Wolf, Psychocandy-era Jesus and Mary Chain rock ‘n roll savagery. Hell yeah. *TRUE STORY: years ago, back when Oliver was playing in his previous band, Skywave, he was the first person to contact me inquiring about where to find a cd of my music when I put up songs online that would later appear on the first Crash City Saints release, the Nightdrive EP.
