De Klerk retires Nadia Meding Thursday, August 28, 2014 - 08:00 News Last week Thursday (21 August), Veronica de Klerk, executive director of Women’s Action for Development (WAD) officially announced her retirement. Salatiel Shinedima will formally take over de Klerk’s position as of 1 September. De Klerk emphasised that Shinedima is a natural born leader with a sharp intellect that thrives on challenges of the same interest as she did. She also continued to explain that WAD is taking on a new approach in trying to encourage men to be more interactive in programmes WAD is hosting in order to address steadily growing challenges the Namibian society still faces. “The time has come to announce that I am stepping down to retire, with a very competent successor,” De Klerk said. During the media briefing, De Klerk also added that this was the right time to let in an innovative and young mind of a man to make a greater impact and to further the agenda of WAD to help women in Namibia. “Mr Shinedima is fully aware of the operational programmes and structure of WAD and he is very well equipped to take the organisation to even greater heights,” De Klerk added, following with the fact that Shinedima is well acquainted with the cultural baggage some women face in the Northern parts of Namibia that are long gone and overrated as he hails from there. Shinedima reassured the board of directors, as well as the Namibian nation that he has the necessary energy, the commitment, the passion and the drive to do what is expected from him. In the 20 years De Klerk spent at WAD, she has helped the development to spread to all regions within the country with three training centres, and 107 trainers and community voice members who are both men and women. WAD also believes that the 50/50 representation of both men and woman is the greatest equaliser to gender disparity.
