Dealing With L.A.s Door-Zone Bike Lanes (DZBLs) (2 1/2-minute video) Im finding it harder to avoid streets in L.A. with DZBLs. So my latest strategy is to use a DZBL only when there is significant faster same-direction motor traffic in the right travel lane, no occupied adjacent parking, and no nearby driveways or intersections. Here is a rearview video of what that looked like yesterday on Westwood Boulevard southbound toward Santa Monica Boulevard at around 10:30 a.m. No problems. No honking. The fact that the street was almost deserted probably didnt hurt. I keep wondering where all the traffic in L.A. is. Actually, I know--its on the freeways. I am continually amazed at how little traffic I find on surface streets in L.A. outside of the p.m. peak travel period (a.m. peak travel seems much less busy for some reason). I wonder if anyone knows of cyclists in California ticketed for not obeying the mandatory bike lane law (CVC 21208) and the outcome (just wondering what the legal consequences may be of defensive bicycle driving in CA on streets with DZBLs). P.S. Note that when controlling the lane on a multilane street, I usually ride slightly left of center. But here I am right of center. Because of the added space to the right provided by the DZBL, I do not want to encourage impatient motorists to pass me on the right.
