Dean Cox says he discovered his passion for coaching in the final years of his glittering playing career. Cox played 290 games for the West Coast Eagles, a club record, and says working with young players and helping them reach their potential is now his passion. “Something I really enjoyed towards the latter part of my career was trying to pass on as much knowledge and educate players around me to hopefully make them better players as well,” he said. “The biggest thing about coaching is managing people and trying to pass on all the knowledge I learned over the 15 years I played. “What helps is I understand the players and the way they prepare, the way they train, how they perform match-day and a lot of their strengths and weaknesses. “So it’s an area I can obviously work through, go through their individual plan with a lot of players I’ve played with and really try and identify areas they can improve at a quick rate to make them better players.” After taking in so many pre-seasons in his time, the 2006 premiership player says he’s still adjusting to the change of approach to summer for a player and a coach. “It is very different,” he said. “I suppose not having to prepare as well as you did when you were playing, so the preparation is a little bit different.
