Dear Bayard friends, several comments have been posted this past week about how wonderful the Bayard community is about coming together to offer support, love & friendship in the face of tragedy sorrow and loss. I totally agree! I have been the recipient of this support in the past with the death of my mom and there is no greater healing feeling than to experience the love and unity this community is capable of. What I dont understand is: Why only when tragedy strikes? Why is this typically not the case outside the scope of a tragedy or loss? Truthfully, on a day to day basis, we have become a community that tends to not be understanding, loving or supportive to those around us who have joys, blessings, hurts, struggles and heartaches every day. We have become a predominately negative community that reviles in others failures, gloats in each others short comings, and shows jealousy or scorn for others happiness or accomplishments. Which in itself is a tragedy! Many people here do not participate in community or school functions, dont frequent our businesses, dont reach out to others (especially our young people) but whether you do or not, most everyone sees fit to chronically condemn all of the above. It seems that when something negative happens or is implied, everyone joyously jumps on the bad news bandwagon like a gaggle of monkeys happy to share and stir the pot. The slams, the gossip, the mean and condescending remarks made to and about others or posted on social media (that are subtly or not so subtly) pointed at those you walk beside each day, those who actually try to make a difference, those who are leaders, and even those you call friends are very disturbing and disheartening! I challenge us all to be the terrific support system, the caring friends, the strong community we know we can be...EVERY single day. The kind of people that we have witnessed ourselves and others to be through our recent sadnesses. Lets show our kids what it is like to grow up in a positive community that always has your back no matter what, a community that lifts each other up in the good and the bad, a community that encourages and supports their own, a community where you know you can look for a friend and always find one. Those of us who have been here for years and years know... Thats the Bayard we knew and have been privileged to call home.
